What's worse is they're very uncomfortable. The pads are extremely stiff and the plastic is extremely rigid, making them instantly painful to wear. Alternatively, pads that look identical in their line (the HD 560s for example) are soft and supple with softer, more flexible plastic for the frame.

sound- i don't have much to compare it with but the sound seems pretty good quality to me. i have to turn the volume up a lot to get stronger bass but other than that i like it. they are not noise cancelling, not an issue for me but i'm sure it is for some people. All of these criteria, through extensive searching on web, led me to the Sennheiser HD 559. There's not a lot out there, but I was able to find enough matches to my query that prompted me to pull the trigger on these. McQUEEN, Alastair Norman Leigh - F/L(Pilot) - He was attached to TAC HQ 21 Army Group B.L.A and was flying in Auster, ? of No 2 TAF Comm Flt when he was killed by ground fire near Beuningen, Nijmegen.I think part of the reason I didn't notice this at first is because I was so used to speakers over the last few years. These are voiced similarly to mid-fi speakers in that the timber has a cardboard flavor to it. They do sound very fun, though. That hasn't changed, but I won't be using these for long sessions or critical ones, either. But since that can be fixed with EQ (it's already included in Equalizer APO AutoEQ), there's not really much I can complain about for this price range. So if my budget was limited to 70-100 euros and I wanted to experience good and spacious sound, I would re-consider these once again.

Like the other review said, this kind of tuning with recessed lower treble will be much more forgiving to flaws in mastering compared to a neutral or bright headphone which can give the sensation of piercing your ears with some music. The 559 comes in a standard Sennheiser box. Inside, you’ll find the headphones, a detachable headphone cable, and a warranty booklet. BARWISE, William - Sgt - possibly killed whilst flying in Expeditor I, HB201 of No 221 Grp Comm Sqn, which disappeared between Kalemyo and Jorhat. The impedance seemed high at 50Ω, but I said to myself that I can use the power amplifier which I had connected to my computer as that has a 6.3mm headphone output. Single-entry cable. I've grown tired of the double entry. Ok, that wasn't a must, but it would be a bonus. At 50Ω, the HD559 are at the boundary between low and high impedance. While they are not that hard to drive at 95dB/mW (don't be fooled by the 108dB/V given in specs, as the voltage sensitivity is always much higher), most low power devices won't be able to drive them hard, meaning you will only get a medium to reasonably loud volume. Before I jump into my review, I feel it's important to give some context about myself that ultimately influenced my review. I personally don't like leather pads and headbands as they tend to be a magnet for the slightest trace of sebum on your skin or hair (requiring cleaning almost every time you use them) and leather also tends to make your ears get hot after longer periods of use. Of course not all leather pads are bad, but I clearly prefer velour. disclaimer: i have pretty much 0 experience with headphones, this is the first pair i've bought that wasn't under 30 dollars so i don't have a very high bar.

The first device I tried was a walkman with modest output power (2 x 5mW) and it was able to drive them nicely without feeling the need for more power. Volume wasn't super loud, but more than enough for casual listening. This sounded promising. Clamping force is on the high side and combined with the fact that pads are rather thin and hard, it can be a bit uncomfortable to some. But compared to other systems, I would say this is one of the very good ones. BROWE, William Dalton - F/S (A/G) - possibly killed whilst flying in either Marauder III, HD559 or HD446 of No 70 OTU, which collided with each other near El Shatt during a formation flying practice.

Next day, after cleaning the headband and pads a bit, I decided to give it a listen on one of my cassette walkmans. I would not use it much with a DAC/amp or a DAP, as for serious listening I have much better pairs. Not necessarily bright or relaxed, the 559 skimps on the highest high notes while retaining plenty of detail and contrast in the rest of the high end. The sound is sharp and articulate, but without being piercing or unpleasant. Note that if you're a basshead this headphone is not for you. If you're used to the V-shaped sound signature with bass region elevated by as much as +10dB compared to the Harman curve, these will seem like they don't have bass. With regards to the two Marauders HD446 and HD559, the South Africa War Graves Project http://www.southafricawargraves.org lists the following S.A.A.F. airmen on board HD559:

Well anyway, I recently decided I wanted to use closed headphones to watch movies at night as to not disturb my girlfriend or downstairs neighbor. No problem, I'll use my Shure 1540. But, despite being properly stored in their box for years, they still managed to fall apart within a few hours of use. The ear pads disintegrated and the headband pad fell apart. Geez. That was discouraging. The oval cups give plenty of room for the ear and the pads don't touch the ear at all, giving a really nice feeling of freedom.Compared to the HD 560S, which are twice as expensive, the HD 559 has less bass, tonality and definition. At the same time, the more expensive model also covers the upper range better and literally opens up another level of airiness. The HD 560S are therefore more versatile, more balanced and with finer brushstrokes in detail resolution, differentiation, spatial imaging and dynamics. They convey the mix and the emotionality of a recording better and with less strain. Nothing surprising there. Depth and placement are okay here, delivering a sense of soundstage that is present, but far from arresting. This is about what I expected from the entry-level model, though the overall dynamic sound probably lends some improvement to this modest impression. If you want neutral sound and have a bit more money to spend, the HD560S is the one to go for, but do keep in mind that one is much harder to drive at 120Ω impedance. It's way better at all aspects, but also about twice the price. So in regard to comfort, for the money you're paying (as of 2023 these are available for ~70euros) you really get very good comfort.
