Ideally, place these cards within 20-30 cms for your baby to start focusing on them. They might focus for a couple of seconds initially but slowly they would get habituated to it as they grow. Dr. Sandra El Hajj explained, “Newborn infants are normally very nearsighted. This means that they cannot focus on things that are more than 10 inches away from them. This is why these babies tend to look at very nearby objects. They may seem to be looking at people around them but they will be seeing blurry faces.“

The Wee Gallery’s Educational Flashcards are a perfect blend of fun and learning. Designed with high-contrast images, these cards not only introduce your child to the world of animals and alphabets but also play a crucial role in their cognitive development. Hang them on the walls ( and ceiling!) near baby’s crib, changing table, bathtub, where you nurse or bottle-feed, and wherever baby will spend timeDo not place all cards together. Limit it to 3-4 max. When the baby loses interest in a set or one card then change to a new image. Explore & play: Encourage kids or those with sensory needs to touch and feel the different textures on the cards. As a result, newborns tend to focus more on things that are close to baby’s face, and they will often study objects by looking at them closely. However, due to baby’s eyesight being not fully developed, everything they see will appear blurry or fuzzy to them. Babies can focus on objects that are 8-11 inches away in the first 3 months. Parents/caregivers need to hold the cards and show them to babies to get their attention. Focus and attention are also an important part of cognitive development, and are possible when baby is offered the right kind of stimuli – not too much and not too little. Every baby is a little different, but research has found that simple contrasting patterns generally attract babies’ attention for longer periods of time and, at the same time, help them relax. Here are some tips that will help you offer your baby the right level of stimulation while encouraging the ability to focus.

If you don’t have a laminator or prefer to buy contrast cards, I highly recommend the first two Lovevery play kits. Dr. Salter states that “at 1 month, babies still prefer focusing on bright objects within a foot in front of them. They can see distance (not as clearly) but prefer near objects.” This is typically the same distance between their eyes and their parent’s faces. Feeling Overwhelmed? Lost? Start Here. Hide the cards around a room or outside. Encourage people to find them by using clues or their other senses such as touch or sound. This activity boosts cognitive skills and provides tactile and visual stimulation. Explore themes & concepts with the cards. Use animal-themed cards to introduce animals or shape-themed cards to teach basic shapes. Stimulates cognitive development & makes learning fun. Sensory flashcards with high contrast images are a great tool to promote visual development in babies. Did you know? Until 3 months of age, newborns are unable to effectively focus on any object more than 8 to 10 inches away from them. Color distinction, as well, is not all that great until that age. Things look blurred during the first few weeks of birth for newborns, slowly the blurriness subsides and they start to recognize the object and then its color.

Made of non-toxic, odorless materials with a matte film coating, these cards ensure safety while being gentle on the baby’s eyes.
