About this deal

But the best part is the energetic score composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann ('Citizen Kane' and ' Psycho') and performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This won't challenge the top tier of modern releases, and you should not be judging it against them, but a 7. People like historian Bob Burns, directors John Landis, Frank Darabont and Joe Dante (who looks more and more like Tony Slattery every time I see him!

Todd Armstrong's nice-guy hero doesn't get in the way of the colorful supporting actors and the giant monsters, but it's odd to see Medea as virtuous: she sells out her father, her country and her religion for a fling with the new boy in town. Sadly, like their other catalog titles, Sony continues to skip out on providing a Digital Copy of the film. The skeleton battle found at the end of the film is easily one of cinema history's more memorable movie moments. This may be an issue for someone like Robert Harris to address and work with the studio in correcting the films with this problem.Harryhausen's original mint-condition 16mm and 35mm film dailies for his entire American career were stashed away as well -- and Jackson is in the process of transferring all of them to 4k video. There are also some nifty bonus featurettes including one on the original skeleton fight storyboards, interviews with Ray Harryhausen by John Landis, a mini-documentary on the Ray Harryhausen Chronicles and another on the Harryhausen Legacy. The stereo spread across the front is welcome and provides some width and spatiality to even the quieter scenes without sounding bogus.

Also available in the "Ray Harryhausen: Ultimate Collection" which includes "It Came from Beneath the Sea", "Earth vs the Flying Saucers", "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad", "The 3 Worlds of Gulliver", "Jason and the Argonauts", "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad", "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger".

The sound in Jason and the Argonauts is less of an issue, and the Blu-ray offers both the original mono soundtrack as well as a quite full and impressive 5. Niall MacGinnis' Zeus, for instance, can sound brighter and louder when you flick to the mono track, but the lossless variant supplies some nice subtle echoing to his voice that works better, I think. Speaking of which, Jackson hosts the second commentary with visual effects artists William Randall Cook. Herrmann's brass and percussion broadside is delivered to all the channels and with clarity and presence.
