What I did have was a vague sense that it might be the best thing I’d written thus far in my short writing career.

There is a lot about what it is to move in the world as a wealthy woman, a white woman, an Asian woman and all the big and small differences between them. Counterfeit is an entertaining, luxurious read — but beneath its glitz and flash, it is also a shrewd deconstruction of the American dream and the myth of the model minority.Chen bounces between the perspectives of Ava and Winnie, with Ava retelling her side of the story to a detective after being caught. I’ve also noticed that I tend to independently pick up good to read that Roxane Gay has reviewed – who knows, we could all be best book buds! xD It brought a lot of tension to it though, because the whole way through you had to wonder, how much is the detective believing her? Up until that point, I had never set a story in my homeland of Singapore, featuring Singaporean characters, so I knew that this was a setting and that these were themes that I’d want to revisit.
