Description

So one day his grandma told him to wrap up in a cotton ball so he did and while he was playing that day outside the cotton ball came off and he was alive by the end of the day and he was so excited. He is perhaps best known for his much-loved Little Princess series, which has been adapted for TV and is currently showing on Channel 5s Milkshake, and for his collaboration on David Walliams’ best-selling children’s books. His mother refuses to let him play outside with his brothers and sisters unless he is wrapped in a big fluffy ball of cotton wool. But instead of keeping him safe, the cotton wool attracts the attention of every fierce creature imaginable little boys, ducks, even foxes!

Definitely worth a peek if you want literary fare that's appropriate for the kiddies but not the usual rigmarole you encounter. Author Jeanne Willis has written over 80 children's books from picture books and stories for younger readers to teen novels.

Worried that he isn't as tough as the others, Colin's mother overprotects and babies the little mouse, preventing him from ever involving himself in what she might deem a "dangerous" situation. He's the kind of illustrator that can show the world's largest conker heading straight for a little mouse holding a delicate umbrella and make it clear in some odd sense that this is one of the mouse's mother's paranoid fantasies. And to be perfectly frank, if I were seventeen again and opening up presents to prepare me on my way, I think I'd much prefer this book to a copy of Love You Forever. But instead of keeping him safe, the cotton wool attracts the attention of all the fierce, scary critters out there! Due to his size his mother did not like him adventuring out in case he got hurt, until they came up with a plan and wrapped him all up with cotton wool, so not to get hurt.

If she hadn't wrapped him in cotton then he wouldn't have been mistaken for a snowball, a piece of delicious bread, or a fat white rabbit. But soon enough he realizes that the cotton is a bit more of a hindrance than anyone could have imagined. This book is perfect for a graduate and/or the protective parent such as myself, and was thinking to myself while reading that I could soooo relate to what was written about the mama mouse.

But instead of keeping him safe, the cotton wool attracts the attention of every fierce creature imaginable – little boys, ducks, even foxes! As well as his own books, he has illustrated books for authors such as Roald Dahl, Paula Danziger and Michael Palin. Colin the smallest mouse wants to play outside with his brothers and sisters but is told to stay inside.

This is a story about a kid who ends the book by walking off into the sunset to find his own way, dangers all around. Afraid that her smallest child, Colin, will be hurt if he goes outside or plays, a mother mouse insists that he sit quietly indoors until his grandmother suggests wrapping him in cotton wool, which proves to be effective, but in a most unexpected way. But instead of keeping him safe, the cotton wool attracts the attention of every fierce creature imaginable - little boys, ducks, even foxes! Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. Ross's style has some similarities to Emma Chickchester Clark here, but there are edgier elements at work.

A little message, not too subtly brought home, but it's in the nature of a fable so it doesn't bother us, and the ending is very empowering to the child reader. The story is really better suited to the overprotective parents than children, but both groups will get something out of this.

But what about the picture book that contains a subtle, understated, sly little message, not for children, but for their parents instead? The fox might look a little too scary for a very young reader but adds the right amount of thrill for a 4year old! It's a rare occurrence, just once in a blue moon really, but if it's done well it's worth taking note of.
