I wouldn’t consider it to be a “healthy” recipe, but a slice of chocolate cake made with tomatoes is better for you than a slice of chocolate cake that isn’t! He is quite pleased with my project of baking every recipe in the book, considering he gets to taste everything, and he was pretty happy with his birthday cake! And then, I notice on the side of the cake there’s some little crumbly bits just falling off, so I think, if I take a knife, I could just…tidy it up a little bit.

He does a great job of creating all the scenes from the poem and I like the way he uses a collage style to create textures.We loved this though, particularly Michael's crazed sugar lust ramblings and Kevin's glorious good-enough-to-eat choccy cake illustrations. Together with Kevin Waldron, Michael’s spoken poem masterpiece is released as a picture book for the very first time, offering a whole extra bite of the hilarious, characterful classic. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk until there are no lumps and the batter is smooth.

What you see on top of the cake are Maltesers, which are round, crunchy malted milk centres surrounded by milk chocolate. Not only is it enjoyable for him to listen too but for myself reading this book to him, using lots of funny and silly noises to bring the book to life. With Michael’s YouTube performance of Chocolate Cake proving to be a bona fide sensation with over 3 million views to date, there’s no doubt that this brand new edition will be a firm favourite amongst families; and a total joy to read aloud. Every year I make him a different cake, and this time I decided to make him one from The Great New Zealand Baking Book. It could be used in technology as children could bake a chocolate cake, and look at recipes and their features, which could also be done with KS2 children.
