Description

Poems as such, you would doubt, might not have translated well into written form, but it does so perfectly in a different perspective. Even though Sarah Kay has established quite the fan base on Goodreads and on the web, I just could not connect with these poems on a deeper level - perhaps because poetry has never been my genre of choice. You may have never heard of Sarah Kay or maybe you have watched every performance in every nook and cranny of the internet. A lovely book of poems to take your time with or like me when you find yourself with a cup of tea in one hand this book should be in the other. Some of my favorite poems in the collection had to do with her childhood out in Montauk and even about women's empowerment (with tons of great lines that I plan to put on some signs for women's marches in the future!

I'm not sure if I'll pick up more from this author if this is her usual style, and don't reccommend this if you want to read something more lyrical, as I did. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join her on the journey of discovering herself and the world around her.

Sarah Kay is a spoken word poet, which means that her poetry is generally presented orally, as opposed to on paper.

On the other hand, the chance to see the poems on paper provided an opportunity to dig into them in a way that listening does not quite offer and even on the poems I had listened to, I noticed components I had not before. No Matter The Wreckage is a brilliant poetry collection that delves into Sarah Kay's past with poems that illuminate everything from her childhood, to her adulthood, to being born and raised in New York City. Only so many into space, before you forget that words are sometimes used for things other than filling emptiness. For a future book there may be value in considering whether playing with grammar, spacing, font and sizing changes etc. She performs with confidence and charisma, which adds that extra bit of voice I found lacking in No Matter the Wreckage. A best-selling author of four books of poetry including B, No Matter the Wreckage, The Type, and All Our Wild Wonder. I appreciate Sarah's collection because I definitely got to experience poetry in a different perspective.

She is perhaps best known for her talk at the 2011 TED conference, which garnered two standing ovations and has been seen over three million times online.I didn't know anything about Sarah Kay or her poetry before I met her at the signing for Jonny Sun's book this past June, but once I heard her read her poem "The Paradox," I was immediately enthralled and added her poetry collection, No Matter The Wreckage, to my TBR and my Christmas want list. If you have not seen Sarah Kay perform any of her poems, check her out on YouTube, she's a great performer).
