Nobody is quite sure how Mr Topsy Turvy got there, or where he came from, but he did arrive, because somebody saw him getting off the train. Good old Mr Topsy Turvey joins the Mr Men Marathon finally as I have now read the first eleven books and filled in another gap.

At first I thought that this book was a subtle (or not so subtle) dig at those of us who do things differently and trying to force us into a certain mould. However, upon reaching the end of the book I suddenly discovered that this is not actually the case. How this geezer walks around with a hat placed like that is one epic sense of balance, or an awkward walking posture, but anyway, I don't think reality and Mr Men come in the same sentence! What Roger really wanted was to make children laugh, which is probably why his own favourite character is Mr Silly. When I was younger we were considered to be a little strange – topsy-turvey if you will – however I have grown up I have seen how these dorky little hobbies that I had when I was a kid have started to move into the mainstream.

Men characters is reported to have been created when Adam asked his father what a tickle looked like: Hargreaves drew a figure with a round orange body and long, rubbery arms, which became Mr. We use cookies to personalise content and ads, to provide social media features and to analyse our traffic. The thing with Mr Topsy Turvey is that he doesn't do things the way that many of us do things, and while at first he seems to infuriate people, he eventually has an effect upon them and when he mysteriously vanishes everybody discovers that they are now doing things a little topsy turvey.

Mind you, we may still be considered a little different, but like the effect that Mr Topsy-Turvey had on the town, our eccentricities have started to have an effect upon our culture as a whole (and even in some places, such as South Korea, their sporting heroes happen to be those who are really good at computer games).

You ought to see his house, the front door is upside down to start with, and the curtains hang upside down! Topsy-Turvy perhaps some kind meta-being who exists simultaneously across multiple alternate universes? The book as many different themes which run throughout its length yet it manages never to detract from keeping a great story, a thing which I feel some other great novels do quite a lot. Roger once said, `I feel very happy to think that when the Mr Men and Little Misses are 100 years old, their readers will always be five. It's so infectious too, as those that come in contact with him soon find themselves speaking Topsy Turvy. In response, Roger drew a small orange man with extraordinarily long arms that could reach anywhere and tickle anyone. Mr Topsy Turvy clearly has issues, but in salutory lesson to us all, manages to carry on with his everyday life. The book itself describes the very intriguing and complex mind of Mr Topsy-Turvy and shows him to be a character who single handedly says no against society's rigours.

The books were an instant hit and Roger went on to create many more Mr Men and Little Miss characters. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance. Think I’m right in stating that as a boy I had all the pre-1990 Mr Men books with the possible exception of “Mr Snow”. Neuware - It has been forty years since Adam Hargreaves asked his father, 'What does a tickle look like ' That question inspired Roger Hargreaves to invent Mr. Hargreaves was born in a private hospital at 201 Bath Road, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, England, to Alfred Reginald and Ethel Mary Hargreaves, and grew up in High Lees, 703 Halifax Road, also in Cleckheaton, outside of which there now is a commemorative plaque.
