Having decided the time is right for a baby, Martha is dismayed that after ten months of trying she still hasn’t conceived and it’s starting to feel like failure to a woman driven by perfectionism. Some I felt so much sympathy for and I was so hoping that they wouldn’t sabotage their own chance of happiness. Also, by about halfway through the book I was getting really cross with one of the characters, and audibly giving advice! I wasn’t too fussed on Martha to start with, but she grew on me – Willow was a delight, although she let herself be walked over.

Martha in particular, having been so close to her father and being very touchy because she failed to become pregnant is particularly against the poor man. All three women have ghosts they must lay to rest but she’s the one most in need of a strong resolution. Martha has other ideas and wants her mother to sell her home and move closer to the girls, this causes some major problems with the normal flow of family life with them. Little by little the women use the insights they gain to begin to let go of well-established but dysfunctional patterns of behaviour, to adjust their perceptions of each other and to let go of guilt, anger and misplaced loyalties. I also enjoyed the evocative descriptions of the rather genteel seaside village of Tilsham and of the family home.In the end, all she really wants is for everyone to be happy – she just needs to realise that people have to come to it their own way.

Mothers and Daughters, the latest novel by Erica James, is a contemporary family drama packed with plenty of secrets, lies and romantic misadventures. It’s my first read from James and I hope it won’t be my last, because this book was such a good novel. Erica James’ writing appears so effortless, and from the first paragraph, I was drawn into the story. She’ll want her mum around when her planned-for baby arrives – though Martha is not actually pregnant yet! I could not foresee how the story would progress and liked how the narrative shifted mostly between the three women.Above all it shows how it is easy to get taken in by appearances which hide the real person behind the shiny surface. Naomi has always kept aspects of her marriage to Colin private, she’s never told anyone what really went on behind closed doors and now is the time.

These are changing times for all of them and the author has done a wonderful job of capturing the different emotions that each family member goes through, and the impact on the other people in their life. Generational stories are always a winner for me – I love the exploration of family dynamics, and the focus it puts on characters, especially when I can fully empathise with them. In 2020, Erica received the Nielsen Silver Award for sales of over a quarter of a million copies for both Love and Devotion and Tell It to the Skies ; she has previously won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award for Gardens of Delight and is a Number One bestseller in Norway. Her characterisation is excellent, the setting beautiful and the slow reveals are delicately and sensitively handled. Since her husband Colin died a couple of years ago, Naomi has quietly rebuilt her life in Anchor House in the coastal village of Tilsham.

However, as the story demonstrates, once the truth emerges it usually becomes apparent that it doesn’t come as a shock to some people, those who have either been aware of, or have suspected, what has been happening but haven’t felt able to ask! I don't want to give the story away, but such a hoo hah because mother had found love and with such a convenient ending. The tale fired my imagination as I knew that it would and there was certainly never a dull or boring moment. So the story revolves around the different positions they find themselves in - Martha, happily married and in control of her life, but unable to fall pregnant, and Willow who is really easy going and drifts through life, much to the horror of her big sister!
