And finally, to the seaside, to the beautiful town of Monterosso-al-Mare, one of the five towns that make up the stunning Cinque Terre overlooking the Ligurian Sea. As I watched this very unique show, I wondered what the residents were doing to wind down their day. Italy is a country that effortlessly weaves together vibrant cities and charming villages, each with its own unique character and beauty. From the world-renowned Trevi Fountain to the halls of the Borghese Gallery, Italian art is prominently on display in Rome, the city where much of it originated. With the budget airlines so prolific nowadays, you can always start in Rome for 3-4 nights, then fly to the next destination set, even if it's all the way across Europe.

To truly experience the warmth of Italian hospitality, many foreigners choose to stay with local families through homestay programs. Thanks to this fierce drive to discover and create, a scrawny peninsula smaller than California has touched every aspect of Western culture, blazing to life in the Sistine Chapel, surging through a Verdi chorus, preening in Valentino red, deepening a vintage Brunello, spicing a tangy penne all’arrabbiata. Italians, even in crisp jeans and a collared shirt, manage to pull off “ la bella figura” (roughly translated as make a good impression). I’d seen so many beautiful things and met so many amazing people, people with stories of lives much different from mine in many ways, and very similar in others. There are different words for this phrase depending on whether you’re saying it to a romantic partner or your parents.

Can you offer any suggestions on how first-timers should approach travel to Italy if they only have a week or two abroad? As we settled in at our table, we began chatting with the couple beside us, who were celebrating their anniversary.

Although from the outside didn’t look like an evening location we were not disappointed and it really had a lovely vibe to it. Two years ago we spent 10 days in Italy (Naples, Livorno, Florence, Manarola and Rome) and 4 nights in Athens.Italians are the most fashionable people in the world and they make and wear the most beautiful jewelry there is. We were allowed to visit the local pizzeria, where we got pretend drunk on Coca-Cola and the heady scent of mozzarella.
