During the Covid isolation she wrote a book about her life with inattentive ADHD which should be published by the end of this year. it was a decent audiobook but the arguments werent conclusive for me on ADHD and it seemed as if she backpedaled on some arguments of the hunter vs farmer dichotomy. It was at that point I lost all interest in finishing the book, and only did so out of spite and the need to achieve my reading goal for the year.

A wounded boar, or elephant, or bear, can kill you—and many a Hunter has been killed by his would-be prey. I think this would be a good second or third book if you’ve just started your adhd learning journey. From an evolutionary viewpoint, "hyperfocus" was advantageous, conferring superb hunting skills and a prompt response to predators. If you or you know of someone who has ADHD, this book is for you-- it includes an interesting theory about ADHDers being the descendants of the Hunters in our former societies, something about which seems to make sense to me. The current understanding of ADHD not necessarily meaning you're bouncing off the walls but that your brain might be the hyperactive part, is so relatable for me.g. the schizophrenic hallucinations and hearing of voices can elevate a person to the role of shaman in some cultures. Unfortunately many of the success stories she mentions were during the 18th and 19th century back when their was less technological automation and more vocational for ADHD folk. Additionally, nomadic Ariaal have high rates of a genetic mutation linked to ADHD, while more settled Ariaal populations have lower rates of this mutation. I, however, am not much of an entrepreneur and was mostly looking for ways to prosper in the workplace, as it's phrased in the description.

But with the Farmers’ conquests in moving west they became the dominators and takers of what laid before them. If you extend this analogy to warfare, where the Hunters are often the front line infantry or the most aggressive officers, the same is true. Having been trained to look at the positive aspects of ADHD by homeschool author Carol Barnier, I enjoyed this book for the most part and found its approach helpful. Good content, but - as every 5th sentence is “quote-unquote” hearing it 100 times within 30 minutes does really become annoying. It is argued that in the hunter-gatherer cultures that preceded farming societies, hunters needed hyperfocus more than gatherers. The watchman theory is that those of us with ADHD are wired like hunters, but we live in a farmer’s world. Ritalin as a stimulant that creates a greater sensitivity to sensory input makes risk-taking unnecessary to feel the sought after sense of aliveness.
