The book starts with an introduction to Longmeadow, with Monty describing how it was a complete blank canvas of farmyard and fields when they first moved there and how he has tried to create a garden that works with nature and sits happily in the landscape. I have liked Monty Don since he wrote a column in the Guardian years and years ago… several of his books have caught my eye, including a recipe book! By the way, I have a book review meme on the 20th of every month, and I invite you to add this, if you would like. Following the cycle of the seasons, Gardening at Longmeadow will introduce readers to the garden from the earliest snowdrops of January through the first splashes of colour in the Spring Garden, the electric summer displays of the Jewel Garden, the autumn harvest in the orchard, and on to a Christmas feast sourced from the vegetable gardens.

My only criticism is there was a degree of repetition when talking about some plants or tasks if they featured in several months but I think this is inevitable in gardening books. The nation’s favourite gardener’ – Guardian ‘There was nothing here that could possibly be described as a garden. There is a a real sense of the garden coming magnificently into being but still rich with the promise of more to come.

It will inspire you to achieve a balanced, healthy garden of your own, that's spilling with produce and full colour all year round.

A lot of gardening books are written from the perspective of teaching the right way to do things and feel quite strict and a little scary for new gardeners.

Longmeadow is a gardeners' garden, but this will be a book for gardening enthusiasts of all skill levels who have been inspired by what they've seen, and who would like to achieve something similar for themselves. I have grown vegetables since I was a small child and growing our own vegetables, herbs and fruit has always been an essential ingredient in the lives of Sarah and I. No missing or damaged pages, no tears, possible very minimal creasing, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. It will inspire you to achieve a balanced, healthy garden of your own, that’s spilling with produce and full colour all year round. This year has given us the enforced opportunity to learn more about the fascinating natural world around us.
