It is hard being a human sometimes and for some, the only life that feels genuine can be a "wild" one outdoors. It was difficult to find a connection with the author, whom I feel could have delved more into the emotional side of his journey. Alone in the forest with no tent, no shelter and not even a sleeping bag or blanket is an exercise in pure survival, and so Geoffroy follows the deer’s behaviour closely. In part, I can understand the author, as forming relationships with other animals is so much more straightforward and rewarding than with our own species for me. He became one with the flora and fauna and knew how to decipher dangerous plants from nutritious ones. And he takes less each time from his old life as his skills and confidence – and indeed appetite – begin to transform. The integration of a human in the lives of the deer is a study of patience, trust and wisdom - for both the human and the roe deer. It is the same every time: I go to sleep, start dreaming, and all of a sudden, I wake up quite numb, feeling as if I am going to be sick.

Deer Man is the incredible memoir of a man who spent 7 years living with roe deer in the forests of France.
