At first I was really invested in the mystery, but with the timeline jumping around and characters being so poorly fleshed out, I just lost interest.

I ignore him and focus on checking the beacon hardware, particularly where we’ve merged new with old. This is great, immersive, atmospheric space horror that shows Barnes is a talented storyteller and proves that, despite rumors to the contrary, horror belongs in space. The next time the commweb—a network of beacons throughout the solar system designed to boost ship and colony transmissions for virtually instantaneous communication—needs an upgrade, a Verux SmarTech machine will be at the controls.

Inspirations for the book came from the Alien franchise and the films Ghost Ship and Event Horizon, as well as the sinking of the RMS Titanic. There might be one thing worse than never being up here again, and that would be being locked up in the Verux Peace and Rehabilitation Tower on Earth. It provided an intriguing mystery as well as suspense and tons of gory action, and what more could you ask from a space horror book? Authors always take a risk when they do things like that, whether the shift is in time, geography, characters, whatever.

the narrator of the story has a great voice, but when she tries to do male voices, or emotional ones or just pronounce hard 'P's like in the word 'up' I just got annoyed. Tony previously spent five years writing The Greatest Scrum That Ever Was, a history book very few people bought. Separate timelines don’t bother me much – if handled well they add spice to the story – and I’m still looking forward to this one, but I will keep your… warnings in mind once I get to this book. Footage discovered from a reality show filmed aboard the Aurora showed that the deceased had experienced visual and auditory hallucinations, as well as paranoia. The story goes back and forth in time, from the current timeline when Claire is in the Verux Tower talking to two of her company superiors, and two months prior, when she was finishing the job with her team. The characters I only liked to characters and just barely I wanted more backstory, ad the book does a horrible job at making them different personalities at the being. An audiobook adaptation narrated by Lauren Ezzo was released alongside the hardback edition via Macmillan Audio. That the book fell short of them has more to do with me and my feelings on the different direction the story took in the second half, which I felt stole something away from the creeping horror.
