From the brilliant, bestselling author of Child 44 comes a suspenseful and fast-paced novel about a colony of global apocalypse survivors seeking to reinvent civilisation under the most extreme conditions imaginable. It explores the ingenuity and tenacity of human nature, the sheer WILL to ensure that the species survives against all odds. Original and imaginative, as profoundly intimate as it is grand in scope, Cold People is a masterful and unforgettable epic. The aliens referred to in the synopsis are really no more than a McGuffin and after they have set the plot in motion they don’t appear again and are only referenced in passing so if you’re looking for conventional SF you may want to try something else.

Michaelides seems also to be dipping into the world of Edgar Allan Poe, offering an unreliable narrator who feels more like a literary exercise.

Then flashforward 20 years and the survivers have created a new kind of human able to withstand the extreme temperatures. Most of the scientists involved fear the outcome of the experiments and consider the creatures dangerous.

Society has collapsed, millions trying to escape yet none of the characters have trouble finding each other amidst the chaos. Brooks places the epicenter of the Bigfoot war in a high-tech hideaway populated by the kind of people you might find in a Jurassic Park franchise: the schmo who doesn’t know how to do much of anything but tries anyway, the well-intentioned bleeding heart, the know-it-all intellectual who turns out to know the wrong things, the immigrant with a tough backstory and an instinct for survival. This is a story that really captured my imagination and the author has such a wonderful way with words that I was able to imagine his descriptions.

Did the scientists succeed in creating a hybrid human that will perpetuate the human race, or did they simply create yet another monster of ambition, vainglorious selfishness and greed? The book concentrates on how the remaining humans survive in Antarctica, the most inhospitable place on Earth and what they do to plan for the future when they are no longer able to scavenge from what they brought with them.
