About this deal

Perhaps it was not love we wanted after all, perhaps it was simply someone in whom to believe, but how can we continue to believe the the beloved now that they believe in us? Perhaps because the origins of a certain kind of love lie in an impulse to escape ourselves and out weaknesses by an alliance with the beautiful and noble. When Chloe and the protagonist (I suppose his name is Alain — we are never completely sure of that) first met in a chapter titled “ Romantic Fatalism”, De Botton wrote about our motivations in falling in love as a desire to invent a destiny so as to spare ourselves the anxiety that no one has written our story or assured our loves, that we are eager to locate inside another person a perfection that eludes within ourselves, and ultimately “ hope to maintain a precarious faith in our species. We easily equate intimacy with a license — we care out of good intentions, we become judgmental of the false notes the other party shows, and ultimately, rosy beginnings end bloody.

We understand that sometimes an item arrives and it’s not quite suitable for what you needed it for - no problem. For my part, I know I’d probably succumb to a stereotype threat and if for some bizarre reason all the people I have known in my life were in a room together, I would probably beg the ground to swallow me whole because I would be switching from mask to mask in a matter of microseconds. The book charts the progress of a love affair from the first kiss to argument and reconciliation, from intimacy and tenderness to the onset of anxiety and heartbreak. It will make you analyse not only the way you are affecting your beloved but the 'how come' and 'why' they affect you. Sure, my self-esteem is close to non-existent (lol) but it’s interesting how I immediately blame myself in such situations rather than relaxing as I generally do with people I’m comfortable with. I suppose I’ve been disappointed by how few people really understand me (though maybe we all feel that way?

We would not love if there were no lack within us, but we are offended by the discovery of a similar lack in the other. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This is the kind of book that we should have read in PSHE rather than watching pointless videos about puberty. De Botton discusses the role of beauty in a relationship and how we tend to see our lovers as beautiful even if others may not necessarily agree. If I could be that beacon of hope for someone, I hope that I won’t be too caught up in whether my stomach is too big or that I don’t have a six-pack. How could they be divine as we had hoped when they have the bad taste to approve of someone like us? I do the same and I didn’t realise it was a thing everyone did (again, I need to force this book onto someone to DISCUSS).

Jan Morris, New Statesman 'Single-handedly, de Botton has taken philosophy back to its simplest and most important purpose: helping us to live our lives. The Subtext of Seduction” and “ Authenticity” discuss our desire and frustration with our worthiness, “ Marxism” on our fear of being loved back (“ how soon their attractions might pale if they began to love us back! Like, sometimes, I like to be prodded for information and other times I just want you to shut up and I don’t want to have to SAY that because that just means you don’t understand me!

Then, on holiday, Chloe reveals she doesn’t like being with him anymore and has been seeing his colleague, Will.

Forgetting, however calming, was also a reminder of infidelity to what I had at one time held so dear.As in a novel, there are characters and realistic settings, but these are blended in with a host of more abstract ideas. Francine Prose, New Republic 'Witty, funny, sophisticated, neatly tied up, and full of wise and illuminating insights. The more familiar two people become, the more the language they speak together departs from that of the ordinary, dictionary-defined discourse.
