Etsuko remarks that her daughter has little understanding of what happened “those last days in Nagasaki”.

In this, his first novel, Ishiguro perhaps felt the need to exorcise some personal ghosts from his past. Etsuko is an unreliable narrator, that is questioning the choices she made in the past, that were deeply reflected in the life of her daughter. Many readers will begin to feel uncomfortable, wishing they’d just stop, and the pressure often builds slowly until something has to give. Mariko, Sachiko’s daughter, also draws Etsuko’s attention to the haunting presence of one woman “who lives across the river”, and whose existence Sachiko dismisses as fantasy. In a story of secrets, not much is initially known of Sachiko’s background, and Etsuko’s own past is likewise a mystery.

During much of the dialogue in the flashback between Etsuko and Sachiko, they are debating a topic or trying to make a decision. Even though A Pale View of Hills may be considered as this thought-provoking piece whose character, riddled with guilt, is unable to make peace with the past and subconsciously struggles, readers of the novel still have to impute too much meaning to the story, which is not there on the face of it.Powerful and understated messages of strong cultural norms from the perspective of a Japanese woman and her family. There is “an unmistakable air of transience” around the concrete block buildings, “as if all of us were waiting for the day we could move to something better.
