This wouldn't make much of a traveller's guide but, what he does do and say is easy-going, well phrased and gently amusing. Nevertheless, it is a very entertaining read, and probably the book I have read more often than any other. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Along comes Boogie, his mate's dog, who is used to London, is 100% Mongrol and prefers concrete to grass.

First they had to survive against all odds as they embarked on a heroic journey up hill and down dale, with rucksacks full of Kennomeat, along Britain's longest coastal footpath - from Somerset to Devon, from Cornwall to Dorset. In the second story, the author and Boogie take a rowing boat along the Thames, from London to its source in the wilds of Wilts/Glos - also an enjoyable light read only slightly marred by the introduction of a repellent love interest! He's supposed to be accompnnied by Jennifer, his on-off girlfriend, but when she fails to turn up, he takes his dog, Boogie - well, more that he can't find anywhere to have him for the duration. It is no ‘how to’ guide and you will gain little, if any, insight into what is now part of the South West Coast Path. It is singularly unpleasant to be around (its owners break up and fight over who doesn't get to keep it), largely due to the fact that Boogie's one great talent in life is a hideous, nuclear-level flatulence and Wallington has to share a tent with it. I have walked sections of the coast path myself and can vouch that it is spectacular with constantly changing seascapes and countryside, and challenging if you do more than a few miles of it. The humorous travel book we've been waiting for' DAILY MAIL) In BOOGIE UP THE RIVER, man and dog take to the water to trace the source of the Thames in a siff of the same vintage as Three Men in a Boat. Really interesting to read about the villages and coastline on your 500 Mile walk, I would watch it if it was a film or even a series.

It reads as a bit 'dated' but then that's also interesting, as it reminds me of how life was in England in the 70's (80's? I laughed out loud, perhaps because I've walked a long distance trail, or perhaps because I walk with a dog, or perhaps, this fella just has a humorous way of seeing things. In the second book, I found Jennifer annoying and cruel - I hope that it is true just so she can read it and see what a bitch she comes across as. Their titanium Siphon has its faults, but these are mostly balanced out by simplicity, small size, light weight, robustness and performance. I read it on recommendation because I was - am - thinking of walking the same coastal foot path, although not with with a dog and not in one go like Mr Wallington.
