This post is part of a new series, highlighting some of the cities you can easily visit before of after Krakow, and what we love about them. Kopiec Krakusa is located across the river in Old Podgórze and is said to be the burial site of Kraków’s founder, King Krakus, although no grave has ever been found beneath it.

Dating back to the 13th century, the Rynek Główny is also the largest medieval square in Europe with a total of 9. The addition to the Baroque metal “helmet” that crowns the gate was constructed in 1660 and then renovated in 1694, which added another metre to the height of the gate. Here you’ll find this toasted open baguette smothered in gooey cheese and sauces — a perfect snack after touring the many bars and brewpubs crammed into Kazimierz. Here you will find three amazing food stands … (1) a stand serving massive gourmet hot dogs (2) a pierogi stand serving beetroot soup in massive cups, and (3 — as the headline suggests) ice cream served in a waffle-dough-like cone. But since the fall of communism in the 1990s, and when it came under the spotlight of Steven Spielberg’s movie Schindler’s List, it has once again transformed into a buzzing, bohemian neighbourhood packed with bars, cafes and historic sights – the Remuh Synagogue traces its roots back to the 1550s; the Galicia Jewish Museum chronicles the sobering history of Polish Jews. Summer, you will see people sitting in deck chairs and getting a groove on while forking down sausages from the grill. Most of them seem to have both 1 star and 5 star reviews - I suppose a lot depends on the sort of information you want.

If you’re worried about getting ripped off, you can read about other common travel scams to avoid here. Located above the Rynek Podgórski and up a large flight of stone stairs, Bednarski Park has a commanding presence over the Podgórze District. One of those camps was located right in Kraków, within the area known today as the Zabłocie District, which is located in the northeast part of the city centre, otherwise known as Podgórze. It’s a great escape from the busy center and is home to one of my favorite restaurants in the city, Pod Wawelem (they serve up hearty Polish cuisine). This site in Kraków was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world as part of the Historic Centre of Kraków and consists of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Early Baroque architecture.Submit feedback: Once you've used this book in Europe, we'd love to hear your feedback — good or bad — about our advice on sights, hotels, restaurants, and travel tips. I could hear the pigeons cooing and the sounds of footsteps echoing throughout the Old Town streets, which was unsettling to witness, since every photo I’ve ever seen of Kraków had people flooding the main streets. If you’re lucky enough to be in Poland for Easter, we suggest joining in some of the traditions, whether you are Catholic or not.

The original Czarna Madonna is held here, and the monastery is also an end-point for thousands of people on pilgrimages, my mother-in-law included. While the Old Town and Jewish District are fairly walkable, there are a lot of valuable things to do just outside the city center that you may need a bus or tram for. krakow on Instagram or TikTok If you’re walking through the outer courtyard of Wawel Castle, you may notice a bright spot among the cold, mostly gray, winter skyline. While the city can feel rather touristy, it’s still pretty, interesting, and worth spending a few days exploring — especially if you want to learn about the grim history of World War II. Despite Krakow’s reputation for nightlife, it’s illegal to drink in public in Poland except in designated drinking areas.

The most magnificent is Sukiennice*, an enormous Cloth Hall that was the focus of trade from the Middle Ages onwards. On Palm Sunday between 10am and 1:30pm you can head to the Main Square to see a competition of “palms- beautiful handmade poles filled with color and vibrance; as well as, traditional song and dance all day long. Once inside, the vintage decor offers a small glimpse of what life was like in Kraków in the 1920s – there’s soft lighting, chandeliers and frilly lampshades, velveteen couches and golden drapes. It is still slightly undiscovered if you compare it to other popular tourist destinations, such as Prague or Paris. The Pinball Museum has all the flipper and pinball machines you could ever dream of, and the best part is you can play them all.
