Though some of my previous lights have come close to checking all the boxes in terms of what I’m looking for in a light, I was left knowing that there was a better headlamp out there for me. I thought that the lack of top strap (from the back to the front over the top of the head) would be a limiting factor, but it stays still on my head just fine when I am running. Featuring a 1000 lumen spot beam which reaches out 163 meters and a soft, even floodlight of up to 400 lumens for comfortable close in use, Fenix HM65R head torch delivers epic performance whatever your adventure. The USB Type-C charging port ensures a convenient recharge in just 3 hours from being fully depleted, and the battery level indicators provide real-time battery status updates.

Fenix HM65R-DT is powered by an included 3400mAh 18650 battery which is charged via the USB-C charging port on the rear of the headlamp (charging cable included). Unfortunately, the light can’t be positioned with this in a way that it’ll stay at some certain angle- that part rotates freely when disconnected from the strap. A powerful red flood light offers 4 brightness settings from 5 to 150 lumens giving the choice of night vision protection / stealthy operation or red flood lighting out to a useful 30 meters. From the photo below, the light retains the plastic collar on the left, which includes a bit of a foot of sorts. At half power on the main Spotlight, it’s 400 lumens for 12 hours (battery life is more accurate at this level), which seems like plenty when running through the night in an ultra. It features a focus free perfectly balanced main beam with 5 brightness settings that reaches out up to168 meters whilst also generating a wide area flood light to safely light your surroundings. The left hand Cree XP-E2 red LED provides red lighting that had four brightness levels, with a maximum output of 150 lumens and a beam range of 30 metres.

Charging is via USB-C, which is becoming the standard, so there should be plenty of cables around, improving the ease of charging. Based on the popular HM65R, but instead of twin white beams, it has a white main beam and a powerful red floodlight. In my defense, I get headaches with most headlamps, but I could definitely tell the difference with this one because of the weight.

The main right hand Cree XM-L2 U2 CW LED provides a spotlight than can reach up to 163 metres with a maximum output of 1000 lumens in the turbo setting. It comes with an adjustable headband with an optional strap that goes over the top of your head (I didn’t find it necessary to use this optional headband, but it might be nice for a helmet).
