About this deal

The Argon EON case for the Raspberry Pi 4 ( not included) allows you to build your very own 4-bay Raspberry Pi NAS! If the fan speed is set to above 1 and the fan has *not* been triggered, it seems to work fine; if it *has* been triggered the bottom few lines are entirely missing. There is a significant heft to the enclosure and feels just like something that should hold a chunk of your digitised life. The back edge is where all the ports are located and we see placeholders for the Raspberry Pi 4’s USB, Ethernet and a cutout for the GPIO.

I'm generally quite pleased, but I do disagree with the author of the review about the ease of use of OpenMediaVault. When we then powered down the unit and rebooted, we were met with total silence: no fans or lights going. I appreciate the work that was put into the documentation but its not really self explaining for a newbe. Probably too much for me, given that I can continue to use my microserver, and put the savings towards something more seriously designed as a home NAS. I decided to set a custom fan profile which wouldn’t spin over 50% until the temperature is hitting 70℃ in an attempt to keep the Argon Eon case as quiet as possible in normal operation. For the software we followed Argon’s guidance and downloaded the latest Raspberry Pi OS, but we did deviate a little. In my review of the enclosure, I discovered an internal USB port – which seems perfect for the next upgrade: boot from USB.

The black, opaque acrylic panels are mounted thanks to embedded magnets and are probably the weakest link of this design. Gets a bit confused about btrfs drives with no partitions, tho': it says "sd" instead of "sda" on the storage utilisation screen. Whereas previous NAS projects often involve a USB hub and cables to external drives, the EON fits up to four drives in an enclosure with a single power source. While you could wake up your PC from a mobile directly, having a dedicated server capable of doing so is the best solution.

With the original script I was able to prevent this by commenting out the HDD checking as is described elsewhere on the forum. The press release seems to suggest more RAM variants may become available in the future - imagine having 16gb RAM alongside the PCIe and processor upgrade! Seems high - I forgot to take a reading before I installed the drives, so I need to remove 'em and check again. Yes, I would be interested to see what it would take/cost to “upgrade” a preexisting Eon to be fully compatible with the Pi5 (new backplate, adapter board(s), etc. As reboots of all machines involved didn’t help much (it found the server, and allowed for SSH but didn’t fix the web UI issue.
