About this deal

As is Laine magazine, which I have been excited about ever since I heard it was to be launched, because it felt like someone had asked me what type of yarn inspires me, what part of the world would I like to get to know, what style of photography looks gorgeous, which designers would I like to read an interview with – and then made a magazine with all that in mind. Rose was born facing north, and the old stories say she will venture far from home and embark on a dangerous journey. With it’s short chapters and varying perspectives it will keep you gripped from start to finish – Rose is the loyal, fierce but soft-hearted person we would all secretly wish to be and it’s an utter joy to experience this adventure with her.

As I don’t have the most vivid of imaginations, I sometimes struggle with ‘epic journey’ stories if there’s no map to guide me; however, in this case the clever naming of countries and continents enabled me to both understand the sense of scale and map the journey out in my head. Making a pact with an enormous white bear, Rose travels on his back to a mysterious castle that holds a dark enchantment, a darker temptation, and the key to her true destiny… A spellbinding adventure to curl up with on long winter nights. The heroine of the tale is sacrificed to a White Bear by her superstitious mother, in exchange for the family’s prosperity and to heal her sister Sara. Pattou described it as, "a fantasy/adventure in which the wandering adventurer Rose embarks on a quest to rescue her kidnapped infant and learn the fate of her true love. Its classic style has echoes of Beauty and the Beast, the Snow Queen and Narnia, with a tiny touch of Grimm Brothers’ darkness thrown in for good measure.

She travels North towards the enchanted castle to right the wrong she had done with the bear unknowingly. Using the dresses as currency and by finding friends along the way she battles terrifying seas and hostile landscapes until she reaches her destination. East (also known as North Child in the UK and Australia) is a 2003 novel by the author Edith Pattou. The slow-paced fairytale vibes are present, creating this longing for magic, cursed princes and brave girls. However as a “softskin” she stands out and needs to disguise herself as a servant until she can try and make contact with her beloved White Bear.
