I didn't have a clue who the killer was and was surprised, so that's something going for this novel I guess. There is the aftermath of the suicide of Grace’s first wife and all the complications of expatriating the body from Germany to the UK and the funeral arrangements to be organised. With all of these issues at hand, and loads of staff not being around (Glen Branson his trusty sidekick being one of them) he has a lot on his plate.

A death by dangerous driving scene following a chase is particularly well portrayed; at one point the events move into slow mode, exactly as they would in real life. I am so pleased to have followed the advice of a Peter James fan and read a novel from the Roy Grace series. It’s just as well that Grace has some distraction from the murder of Lorna Belling, because the more deeply his team digs into the case, the more likely it seems that the killer was someone inside the Sussex Police.
