Description

After the start, Margery and Gladys confront in Margery's house and accidentally kill him, the plot follows a roller coaster of twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end. If it had been in the cinemas, Penelope Keith and June Brown would have been honored with Oscar nominations. Because the intruder was attacked from behind, a controversial court decision found Martin guilty of homicide; he served 18 months in prison before the conviction was changed to manslaughter and he was released with time served. Penelope Keith plays her usual middle class lady looking down upon all and sundry but her character is one dimensional and there is only so many times that you can chuckle at her snobby sarcasm and her superior tone of voice. Like any good drama and comedy, there are laughs along the way when they run out of money, break into a pharmacy, etc.

Their uneasy alliance is made uneasier when Margery learns that her late husband Eric had a 20-year affair with Gladys and the discovery profoundly affect Margery's son Graham. The plot (what gets them on the move) is outright implausible, but the neighbourwatch-theme is quite good, I think. Penelope Keith (classy as ever) has played society matrons and snobbish beldames in several long-running sitcoms. It is easy for the frequent viewer of television to become pessimistic about the future of the medium. The pairing of Penelope Keith and June Brown seemed a bit strange to me, but as there seemed to be nothing else on that night, I watched this, and I'm glad I did.By joining TV Guide, you agree to our Terms of Use and acknowledge the data practices in our Privacy Policy.

Starring Penelope Keith and June Brown as the title characters, it was produced by Carlton Television for ITV and directed by Geoffrey Sax. Trinians, of course the many Carry Ons and the numerous TV series' movie outings from the 1970s onwards. What follows is a comedy of misunderstandings in which these two very different, mature ladies are led on an unfortunate series of incidents which snowballs into a crime spree.

For those who know Penelope Keith only as Margo or Audrey from TV, her dramatic moments in this film will be a real eye-opener. However, with money short and Gladys needing medication, the duo is forced into a surprisingly full-blown crime spree, proving more than a match for an unlikely pair of policemen, Detective Inspector Woolley and Detective Sergeant Stringer.

Here, she plays a 60-something widow who lives in a posh neighborhood that has been the target a recent break-ins.The two women are an odd couple with (they think) little in common, until an intruder enters Margery's house and she coshes him (from behind) with her Waterford crystal vase. Unfortunately, towards the end the dialogue gets all 'meaningful' in a manner more typical of American TV scripts. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose inevitable stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs.

Luna is a former dancer, who left that dream behind for a grounded life managing her familyâ€s construction business and gets the opportunity to transform a gymnasium into a studio for aerials. The unusual chemistry between Margery and Gladys uncovers a trail of mistrust, lies, deceit and extra-marital affairs. A neglected housewife makes an unexpected friend at a nursing home, where she hears a true tale about an independent woman in 1920s Alabama, who ran the town diner, served food to people of color and protected her sister-in-law from an abusive spouse. As the police net tightens around them, the two very different, mature ladies are propelled on a shared voyage of self-discovery as skeletons fall from the closets forcing both women to reflect on their past lives.

Believing that she has killed him, she panics and flees the house with Gladys, leaving behind her handbag. After a night on the town at nearby Blackpool, the two women take the boat and sail off to the Caribbean. Instead of Texas highways, their getaway takes Margery and Gladys across the secondary B-roads of the Midlands, en route to sanctuary in (wait for it) Milton Keynes. We've all met a lady of the house who thinks she a bit above everyone else (Penelope Keith excels in those roles) and the 'Mrs Mop' types that always seem to get the upper hand in the end.
