Works in this genre written in the Latin West were based in significant measure on the Christian liturgy and framed in Christian terms but also drew in part on Hebraic and Arabic magic traditions. In the past two decades scholars have made significant progress in coming to terms with the literature and intellectual culture of medieval learned magic. By comparison, from the mid- thirteenth to the fifteenth century the broader intellectual and social conditions that informed the conception and practice of magic were relatively stable in England.
