It will then have a limited run in local cinemas from Thursday, May 25, before being released on digital, DVD and Blu-ray from Monday, June 5, courtesy of Miracle Media. Viv Anderson, (the first black footballer to play for England), former carpet fitter, Gary Birtles, and Tony Woodcock.

However, there are some intriguing bits in this documentary about their own personal lives that I don’t believe have been talked about too much, if at all. This compelling film, which will fittingly have its world premiere in Nottingham on May 25, 2023, charts the lives and careers of the three Nottingham Forest football players during a time of major political and social upheaval and cultural change in the UK. Fasinating story of our three heroes, but an intriguing insight into the world of football with its highs and lows. They weren’t born as toys for Arab states or Russian oligarchs, they were just clubs for men, boys and women to enjoy a game of football as a group. The Film focuses on 3 players from that team who were all born and bred in Nottingham, and all went on to play for England. It is said: “This rousing documentary offers a window into British modern history through the eyes and stories of these unlikely heroes. Local Heroes explores football's political and cultural transformation over the years and draws parallels between life as a footballer in the 1970s to life in the footballing world now. The film interviews the players both in their homes, in studio and on the streets of Nottingham where they grew up, and is a poignant look at what life was like growing up in 60s Great Britain.

Local Heroes" is set against the cultural, economic, and social backdrop of Britain in the 1970's and is a deeply personal film in which the three recount their climb to the top of the professional game during a period of austerity and economic turmoil. Local Heroes is set against the cultural, economic, and social backdrop of Britain in the 1970's and is a deeply personal film in which the three recount their climb to the top of the professional game during a period of austerity and economic turmoil.Nottingham Forest were promoted to the English First Division in the 1976-77 season, and remarkably went on to win the Championship and the League Cup the following year. Sharing their fascinating journey, the trio recount their rise to fame and the obstacles they faced along the way, and how, during a time of economic difficulty, they persevered and prevailed.

A must-see film for football fans, Local Heroes provides a captivating and moving glimpse into the lives of these determined individuals and sheds light on an inspiring, rarely heard story from the history of the beautiful game. All three are working-class men from Nottingham who fought their way to the top despite the obstacles they faced, which included rampant racism and discrimination. I particularly liked the candid camera work, and the director John Warrington deserves great credit for keeping the feeling of ‘being in Nottingham’ running throughout the film. The untethered joy of running around with friends, kicking a ball and making up rules based on the ‘pitch’ that is available, whether that be a backstreet, a field or an indoor court. I was reminded of my Father telling me about players from this era, muddy pitches, players that (like Garry) been carpet fitters or labourers or car salesman before getting their big break.

No spoilers from me but from the beautifully filmed, not sentimenal and spot on direction of John Warrington to the engaging narration Gary Webster , this is simply a brilliant film. Where to Watch: Local Heroes will then kick-off on digital, DVD and Blu-ray this June courtesy of Miracle Media. Closed captions refer to subtitles in available languages with the addition of relevant non-dialogue information. There is footage so dark in this documentary that you can hardly see anything, and it’s just a person sat in a room.
