Description

Named as Ian Fleming’s finest novel in numerous polls, and described by the author as, ‘In many respects, my best book,’ this nail-biting thriller sees 007 ensnared by an elaborate plot devised by the Soviet counter-intelligence agency, SMERSH. The boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn, with the cloth slightly frayed in the corners and along the edges. He is to shoot both of them, throw Romanova's body out the window, and plant a film of their love-making in her luggage; in addition, the Spektor is booby-trapped to explode when examined. To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details. Casino Royale (1953) • Live and Let Die (1954) • Moonraker (1955) • Diamonds are Forever (1956) • From Russia with Love (1957) • Dr.

Reader's noteEnjoy another James Bond novel with this 1963 edition of From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming ! The serialisation of the story in The Daily Express in 1957 provided a boost to the sales of the book; [67] a bigger rise in sales was to follow four years later. The ebullient and dissipated Darko Kerim reigns over ‘Station T’ with the help of his many children, and becomes Bond’s firm comrade. The title of the book is occasionally printed with a comma, as From Russia, with Love, depending upon the publisher.

Woollacott and Bennett agree, and maintain that "Bond embodied the imaginary possibility that England might once again be placed at the centre of world affairs during a period when its world power status was visibly and rapidly declining. Two of the novel's most important characters, Romanova and Grant are both defectors who go in opposite directions, and the juxtaposition of the two characters serves to contrast the two systems. Casino Royale; Live and Let Die; Moonraker; Diamonds are Forever; From Russia, With Love; Dr No; Goldfinger; For Your Eyes Only; Thunderball; The Spy Who Loved Me; On Her Majesty's Secret Service; You Only Live Twice; The Man with the Golden Gun; Octopussy and the Living Daylights]. Kerim immediately recognizes the three Russians they saw in a meeting a few days before on the train and decides to get them off. Their aim is to not only kill him, but destroy his reputation in a public scandal that will make MI6 look bad in the public eye.

This is also the first novel in which Bond receives a gadget from Q-Branch, although Q himself is not featured. Later, after successfully delivering Tatiana to the West, Bond has a final encounter with Rosa Klebb in Paris which leaves her dead and Bond poisoned. And regardless of its place within the longest-running continuous film series in cinema history, it is also an outstanding example of the British spy thriller in its own right.

Big in Live and Let Die, Bond has been declared as an enemy of the Soviet Union and has been issued a "death warrant" for immediate execution ("To be killed with ignominy"). Colonel Rosa Klebb, SMERSH's director of operations, works with the head planner and chess champion Kronsteen to put the plan into effect, recruiting the stunningly beautiful Corporal Tatiana Romanova to seduce Bond and employing SMERSH's top executioner, Irishman Donovan "Red" Grant, as the assassin. Fleming's tautest, most exciting and most brilliant tale' - a positive review from the Times Literary Supplement. The cultural historian Jeremy Black points out that From Russia, with Love was written and published at a time when tensions between East and West were on the rise and public awareness of the Cold War was high. They instruct an attractive young cipher clerk, Corporal Tatiana Romanova, to tell the British that she wants to defect from her post in Istanbul and claim to have fallen in love with Bond after seeing a photograph of him.Despite this, there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the binding remains intact and secure. Overall, this is a stunning surviving copy from the original 15,000 printed in 1957 and is in very good condition. The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. Fair overall condition, 'not bad for a library book' (and for most copies extant) as some sellers describe pretty rough books.
