And in so many ways the blind Daredevil pitching up against the almost blind Mole Man is obvious, yet no-one before Waid had considered it.

Having turned his world upside over the past several years, Matt Murdock realizes that justice may not be blind to his past and villains may not be the only ones looking for answers. While morally admirable, I felt it detracted from a key image of the character, of Matt standing in court looking like the real life version of the statue of justice.

Daredevil’s usual nemesis Kingpin is entirely absent from this book, instead the baddies he fights are long-forgotten villains only someone with an encyclopaedic mind of classic comics like Waid could remember and resurrect for his run.It almost seems like a testament to the power of positive thinking because in the old days if Daredevil tried to break up a hit at a Mafia wedding, he’d probably have ended up covered in the brains of the lucky couple. Then, Spider-Man and Daredevil team up when Black Cat is arrested and Murdock is the only lawyer who will touch her (her case, we mean). It’s a real shame because it’s one of the best Daredevil runs in years and one I’m happy to have in my library. Which leads, eventually, to Matt changing his focus from trial law to coaching people who will represent themselves in court.

The publicity preceding the original comics in which these stories appeared made much of Mark Waid’s view of Daredevil considerably diminishing the bleak noir outlook that had sustained Daredevil since the mid-1970s. An equal partner is pencil artist Paolo Rivera, who brings a strong sense of graphic design to his pages, exemplified by the innovative cover to this book. It's a fantastic change after so many dark and dingy storylines and rings true to character as well; it's nice to see Matt having fun again, instead of worrying about the world ending. The overall story is very coherent and does a lot with the existing relationships and building new ones. Daredevil is saving a bride of a crime family then since his identity is known to the world he has to dodge that and also help this muslim taxi driver in a case and fight Klaw and that was an awesome one! Following a shocking discovery about the Marvel Universe, Daredevil has a weighty decision to make, the results of which will affect his friends and enemies both.

This is a refreshing take on the character especially as dark and gritty is really something that’s run its course in superhero comics and is generally something I’m sick of reading about. Since this is very much an introduction book for the character, there is quite a bit of exposition that those familiar with the character might find tedious at times, but I find that it only serves to make this iconic character more accessible. Using his radar sense, Matt can detect that Bruiser's body can't handle the changes to his body made by the power, so he concentrates on one shattering bone and hits it, escaping from Bruiser. Having turned his world upside over the past several years, Matt Murdock realizes justice may not be blind to his past and villains may not be the only ones looking for answers. I know it'll linger for a while yet - making it a great plot device to carry this run to an elevated mystique beyond the day-to-day DD fun we're getting.and that same old 'grinning in the face of hell' attitude, the Man Without Fear is back in action and leading with his face. While Waid is shouldering the writing duties as well as infusing a new attitude into Daredevil, Rivera and Martin apply golden age visuals as well as their own style to create something altogether unique. When the Punisher's new apprentice is cornered by Hornhead, she gives a small rant about how the only people who are actually serious about being heroes are those who've suffered tragedy. He and artist, Paolo Rivera creatively explore the limits and finer points of his extrasensory powers.
