Description

DMX512 is a bus network no more than 400 metres (1,300ft) long, with not more than 32 unit loads (individual devices connected) on a single bus. If more than 32 unit loads need to communicate, the network can be expanded across parallel buses using DMX splitters. Network wiring consists of a shielded twisted pair, with a characteristic impedance of 120 ohms, with a termination resistor at the end of the cable furthest from the controller to absorb signal reflections. DMX512 has two twisted pair data paths, although specification currently only defines the use of one of the twisted pairs. The second pair is undefined, but required by the electrical specification. Although other products are controllable using DMX, lighting systems are the best known for using the protocol. DMX control enables lighting designers and manufacturers to control multiple lighting solutions from a single lighting controller or computer software. If we look inside any frame, we can see that it consists of just a single byte wrapped around one start bit and two stop bits. The start bit is zero, and the two stop bits are high. As the DMX signal moves through your lights, it loses signal strength over time. At some point, it will become too weak to be reliable. Grounded receivers that have a hard connection between signal common and ground are permitted but their use is strongly discouraged. Several possible grounding configurations which are commonly used with EIA485 are specifically disallowed by E1.11.

While you can technically run DMX signal for 1800 feet, I’ve found that anything over 500 feet gets a little scary and can get flaky depending on the number of fixtures attached. A channelis a set of 255 steps that are assigned to control attributes in each light. This may be a color like red, green or blue, and intensity, strobe, pan/tilt or other attributes. DMX problems can manifest themselves in a few ways. It may be that your lights aren’t working at all, or perhaps they’re not doing the correct thing! Universes can’t be combined together, and each universe needs its own DMX cable run. When it comes down to your lights – they don’t know what a universe is, and quite frankly, they don’t care. At its base, however, the best way to understand a single universe of DMX is as a collection of 512 channels, each with its own set of 256 values (that is 255 + 1 more for 0). Using Channels to Control LightingMoving lights use adjacent DMX512 channels to control different aspects of their behaviour. These attributes may, for example, be laid out as: Luna, Oscar; Torres, Daniel (2002–2009). DMX512 Protocol Implementation Using MC9S08GT60 8-Bit MCU (Application Note 3315) (PDF). American National Standard E1.11 – 2004 (PDF). Entertainment Services and Technology Association. p.19. Now that the voltage levels have been discussed, we can examine how content is sent over the RS-485 system. The serial communications method entails sending bytes of data in a stream of eight bits per byte, wrapped around a start bit and stop bits. The start bit is a single bit period set to logic zero. The stop bits when using DMX are two bits set to logic 1. RGBW LED Strip (4 in 1 integrated LED chip) has a power consumption of 14.4W per meter. That’s the power consumption of all 4 colours together, meaning an average of 3.6W per colour per meter.

Technical Specifications

Incidentally it could also be used as a lighting controller, if no LEDs are attached to it, provided the software is changed to operate in this manner as a DMX Out (RS-485 Master) device, perhaps under the control of the Arduino board that it plugs onto. This is a wall mounting LED controller, compatible with standard DMX512 signal. That means you may configure the system to work with any “smart home controller” or any device that is in compliance with DMX lighting protocol. The annotated ‘scope trace below shows the >22 bit-period logic low level, followed by the >2 bit-period high level, followed by the frames containing 0x00, 0x0A, 0x0A, 0x0A. These are the start frame, and frames 1, 2, 3. Each DMX512 data link transmits a start code that identifies the data type and up to 512 eight-bit values, between 0 and 255, so one cable typically controls 512 dimmers or device attributes. Because DMX supports only 512 channels per data link, multiple DMX universes can be used in situations where more than 512 control channels are needed. A Universe refers to a DMX512 data link from the console, and all of the devices on that data link. Many newer lighting consoles support multiple DMX universes, which must be cabled independently. Sometimes this is done intentionally to partition the control into units, for example dimmers and moving lights might be on separate data links even though neither link uses all 512 data slots.
