Andrei Dmitriev’s Russian kitchen. Photographed by Deborah Turbeville, Architectural Digest, September 2006 Don’t be afraid to make cuts: “If you want to alter the shape by cutting it, just keep an eye on the hardware connection points. As long as those remain intact you’ll be able to reassemble the piece. If you do end up cutting something you didn’t mean to, you can always drill a small pilot hole and screw it together.”The images in the book are fascinating in their detailing: Mythical beasts come alive in some, while decorative trellises are the highlights in others. Mahatma Gandhi makes an appearance, as do winged characters from Indian epics, showcasing the length and breadth of the imagination behind these facades. Architecturally, they are significant, as the artisans and artforms no longer exist. These ornamental and embellished works show the importance of art in the community, where every element of design has been woven into the cultural ethos of the region. Written in the elevated quality that only the editors of Architectural Digest can master so well, [this] is the world's newest guide to the best and brightest designs to inspire your next big home project." -- The Editorialist For over 10 years, the photographer traversed the 80 odd villages the area comprises, and captured hundreds of images. He is working on several aspects of Chettinad, and Mogappu happens to be the first collection to emerge from his extensive travels. Ranging over 10 feet, these facades were built in symmetry with the first floor of the houses (using the same pattern, texture and colour) so that from a distance the effect is arresting. These mogappus are adorned with a variety of figures: God and goddesses, mythical creatures, freedom fighters and even European characters that were used by the owners to signify their position in society. These statues were made of sudhai aka stucco—a technique that was widely used in temples of the time as well. The kitchen has been the darling of interior design aficionados for quite some time. As for what makes for the best kitchen—well, that’s a matter of personal taste. Some like them bright, light, and white—and undeniably modern, sleek, and streamlined. Others are partial to a more rustic aesthetic and the French variety of this subset in particular. Others still seek out kitchens that break free from the proverbial bundt cake mold, opting to bring exceptionally unique and colorful spaces to life.
