Description

The book had an interesting premise, was promising, and did have plenty of detailed content about a small number of murderers which fit a definition of 'psychopath', as well as several who didn't (and who were assigned the arbitrary term 'savage'). Well researched and peppered with interesting insights, it added a little more to my understanding of this specific type of criminal. Book Genre: Biography, Crime, Death, Education, Horror, Mystery, Nonfiction, Psychology, Science, True Crime TALKING WITH PSYCHOPATHS AND SAVAGES has a low average rating on Goodreads and now I know why, I don't usually like calling out the author if it's down to just a poor story but this true crime book came across as really tedious. Christopher Berry-Dee does not know how to write or how to not come across as an a**hole. Barely scratches the surface of the cases looked at, there is no "deeper journey". All that is in this book, you can find on Wikipedia and YouTube; as the author mentions himself several times. A lot of self promotion from the author, I think every chapter mentions one of his other books. A whole paragraph of it at one point.

I'm a true crime nut so I thought this would be great but it just wasn't up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, it was a very interesting book but it's the author who let's it down. I can't count how many times he talks about his other books, even going so far as to leave information out of this one while telling the reader you can find it in my other book. Um no, if I had bought this book myself thinking I was going to get all the information about the cases he mentions and then I get told that I need his other books I would be pretty mad. Talking with psychopaths and savages by Christopher Berry-Dee is the first in this series and it's interesting to see the way one has to try and get into the mind of evil, it's not so much the killers crimes we see it's the relationship the criminologist has to make to gain some kind of trust for the killer to open up. As a minor side note, the grammar and punctuation contain many errors. This can easily be overlooked; it was just unexpected for a traditionally published book by a prolific author. The flow of this book is awful. Chapters have different killers in the same paragraph so makes it so confusing to form a complete thought about one killer. This is the first book by Christopher Berry-Dee that I read and I am so happy I found him. Being a person interested in true crime, criminology, and so on, not knowing about this author before makes me feel bad and clueless. I loved that this book covered less well-known serial killers; usually, these books just examine the same few famous serial killers. I was really excited to learn about these killers I didn’t know much about; especially the non-American killers. unreservedly accessible pdf archives on the Internet. There is also an issue with the purpose of this book. It would be remiss to deride a person for believing “Talking with Psychopaths and Savages” contained conversations with psychopaths. Yet, it doesn’t. The title and blurb allude to interviews with some of the world’s most evil people, however, the contents is a mere sprinkling of quotes gathered by the author. The real content is an account of the lives of a handful of killers and their crimes. There is no scientific examination into the true working of such deprived minds or any hypothesis as to their abnormality.

If you want to read about the mind of killers there are plenty of amazing books out there, this isn’t one of them. I swore I’d never read this author again and then a friend bought me this book. I have a thing of never not finishing a book so I pushed through, but it was hard work!

A comprehensive and fact filled exploration let down by crass observations, casual judgmental tone and off colour humour. What really bothered me about this trash though, was his arrogance. At one point, after discussing a young woman's gruesome death, he has the vulgar temerity to insert a quote from the victim's mother plugging one of his books on the subject. He also manages to berate female victims for not taking his advice, implying their stupidity was to blame for their murders. This is not a book for the squeamish, but it is undeniably fascinating in its portrayal of just what one human being will do to others - while all too often moving among us unnoticed and unhindered. If their crimes seem as incomprehensible as they are horrific, it is undeniably true that the world's most savage killers may be much closer than we think . . . This is not a book for the squeamish, but it is undeniably fascinating in its portrayal of just what one human being will do to others – while all too often moving among us unnoticed and unhindered. If their crimes seem as incomprehensible as they are horrific, it is undeniably true that the world’s most savage killers may be much closer than we think…’ There is not one point at which you actually get to read ANY of his apparent MILLION interviews with murderers and serial killers. Lost count of how many times I read the sentence, “I’ve interviewed him twice before.” Where can I read that interview, if not in a book entitled TALKING WITH PSYCHOPATHS AND SAVAGES?One of the main things which I found really annoying, is how the author constantly refers to previous books he has written. I get he is trying to tell the reader that if you found this interesting, you might want to read my other book where I mentioned it too but it comes across as repetitive self promotion. Talking With Psychopaths And Savage's Beyond Evil by Christopher Berry-Dee is book 2 in this series and it's definitely darker than the first but it also came across that the author wasn't bothered this time with placing little snippets of his real opinion as well as his professional opinion thought out about these evil people he has interviewed in his working years as a criminologist. Add to all this the near constant spelling and grammatical errors as well as jumbled up dates (he claims that Oscar Pisotorius murdered Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 and 2015, then says the trial was in 2014... like I said - Wikipedia would be more informative) and you have what I can safely say is the worst book I have ever read. If this is your first foray into true crime and you don’t want to actively lose brain cells, read I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara instead. She never bragged about how great she was, never made fun of the Golden State Killer’s victims and her book was clearly proof read before it was published.

In Talking With Psychopaths and Savages, bestselling author and criminologist Christopher Berry-Dee takes readers deep inside the dark minds of some of the most pitiless and dangerous people alive.Firstly; this book title is incorrect. Never in this book do we ever get to “Talk WITH Psychopaths” etc. This book should be called “Aimlessly Talking ABOUT” because that’s all you’ll read. One of my issues with this book was that even though it featured lesser-known serial killers, it continued to quote and constantly find a way to bring other well-known serial killers into the story. This frustrated me as I wanted to know more about the killers in this book not the killers that I already knew so much about.
