About this deal

I'll start off with the animation since people care so much about it. Queen Bee isn't exactly known for it's top-tier level of animation seen in the likes of Pink Pineapple or Teruaki Murakami. It's basically the poor man's Vanilla series.

a. 7 (tujuh) jam 1 (satu) hari dan 40 (empat puluh) jam 1 (satu) minggu untuk 6 (enam) hari keja dalam 1 (satu) minggu; atau Yobidashi: these are sancha and zashiki-mochi who didn't wait for customers in a pleasure house but rather entertained them in a tea house with their entourage of kamuro or shinzo.

Tayū ( 太夫) are the highest class of traditional entertainer in Japan. Though technically the highest class of geisha, a general term for the highest-ranking entertainers, tayū were distinguished historically from other geisha by the quality of their intensive training from a young age in numerous traditional artforms, and that they lived and worked in Kyoto, the capital of Japan, which remained the center of culture when the capital moved to Tokyo. I have received several questions about tayu since I posted the photo of Kisaragi Tayu last Sunday. I'm afraid I don't know much about tayu even though I have encountered one personally, but what I do know I will share with you now. The first time that an oiran met a customer (called "shokai"), the oiran sat apart from her customer, not speaking to him, and not eating or drinking anything. The customer was appraised during this shokai meeting. If considered to be unsuitable for the oiran, he couldn't court her anymore. Customers needed to demonstrate their financial power by calling many geisha and being generous to them while they entertained him. Some 'normal' scenes were also very good as well, like the swimming pool scene and the stars when Midori takes the male protagonist to school, which was nice lovely romantic business, and that's what I really liked, well for as long as it went on for anyway.

This being a harem, there are of course a bunch of characters but the only ones worth mentioning are Reiji, Midori & Shiho. As mentioned before Reiji is a typical teenage boy who acts in the way a teenager tends to react in such situations, though he’s a bit of a pushover resulting in some truly absurd moments. Then there’s Midori & Shiho who are both interesting heroine’s in their own right, but are soon overshadowed by the hoard of girls the plague this manga in the latter half. Tayu make two major public appearances in Kyoto every year, and both are connected to famous tayu from the past. The first is Yoshino Tayu Hana Kuyo (Yoshino Tayu Memorial Service) held in April every year at Josho-ji. There is a procession of tayu down the street outside the temple, and then there is a brief memorial service followed by a tea ceremony for several hours inside the temple grounds. The photo posted above was taken at Yoshino Tayu Hana Kuyo. Unlike spending the night with a lower ranked courtesan, to be with an oiran required a lot of customs and conventions. In the Edo period in Kyoto and Osaka, courtesans of the highest rank were called "tayu." In its early days, there were tayu in Yoshiwara too, but they disappeared around the time the name "oiran" started appearing. Today "oiran" is sometimes used to refer generally to a courtesan or prostitute of that period.Sancha joro: originally lower than tayu and koshi, but due to the disappearance of tayu and koshi, the words "sancha joro" later referred to a high class courtesan. The second meeting (called "ura") was basically the same as the first except the oiran sit slightly closer to the customer.

Of course, I did meet Kisaragi at Seiryo-ji before the Yugiri Memorial Service, but I only had five minutes to photograph her. I introduced myself, thanked her for her time, and photographed her in as many different angles as I could get in such a short time. I believe I finished in four minutes, and I thanked her again and left. Miuke means that a customer of a courtesan (not only an oiran) pays off her debts, or pays money to redeem her so that she no longer needs to work as a courtesan. In the case of miuke of an oiran in an omise, the miuke fee was said to reach several thousand ryo (a unit used in the old Japanese currency system). Once recognized as a regular, it was regarded as unfaithfulness if the customer was seen with a different oiran. When one oiran noticed that her customer went to another oiran, she caught the customer near the Yoshiwara O-mon Gate and complained to a tea house. It is said that in such a situation the customer paid some money and apologized. Furisode shinzo are 15 to 16 year-old apprentice courtesans. Kamuro were promoted to furisode shinzo at around this age by their mentor courtesans. The second major event is the Yugiri Memorial Service held at Seiryo-ji Temple in Arashiyama in Kyoto. This service takes place in November just as the maple leaves are turning color, and it is much shorter than the Yoshino Tayu Memorial Service.

Whether you’re looking for something traditional or futuristic, there’s always something to choice from. If I remember correctly, all three of the tayu who were at Yoshino Tayu Hana Kuyo were from Shimabara in Kyoto, but I cannot confirm that. The only tayu I have seen on more than one occasion is Kisaragi-san.

Watching a new show immediately after its release is always a great way to start an AnimeWalker day. This will give you a sense of when the next episode will air and provide you with a recap of the story before you even get started watching. In the drawing room, the oiran took the seat of honor and her customer always took a less important seat. The oiran-class courtesans were considered to be superior to their customers. An oiran dochu is a parade of an oiran, together with her subordinates, such as kamuro or furisode shinzo, walking to an ageya or a hikitejaya. Nowadays an oiran dochu is sometimes re-enacted in kabuki plays or at local festival events. Tayu: high class courtesans whose numbers were very limited in Yoshiwara. Takao tayu or Agemaki tayu are known even until today as legendary courtesans. Tayu in Yoshiwara had disappeared by the middle of the 18th century (during the Horeki era).
