Demakos, Matt. Cut-Proof-Print. From Tenniel’s Hands to Carroll’s Eyes. Stuffing the Teapot Press, 2021. While most contemporary readers of Alice see little more than a childrens story, Victorian adults may have had a much different experience. Well known for his caricatures in Punch, a popular political magazine, Tenniel satirised political leaders and events. In fact, many scholars claim Alice characters are reminiscent of Tenniel's Punch drawings. It is suggested that he was inspired by paintings by his friend Dante Gabriel Rossetti (modeled by Annie Miller) and his friend Arthur Hughes. Carroll owned Hughes’ oil painting ‘Girl with Lilacs’ ( Stern).

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have been translated into about 170 languages and interpreted by artists from around the world, who saw their own cultural experiences reflected in Alice’s adventures. They sought to capture the curiosity and wonder of childhood, the nonsense of the adult world, and the special experience of reading Alice.Writing style and themes [ edit ] Symbolism [ edit ] Three cards painting the white rose tree red to cover it up from the Queen of Hearts (Coloured Tenniel illustration) Harss, Marina (28 August 2014). About

The first person to illustrate the Alice stories was the author himself. Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dawson, first came up with the story in 1862 while on a river trip with his friends, the Liddell family. According to Carroll and the Liddell family, he told the story to their three daughters Lorina, Edith, and Alice as a way to pass the time. Later, Carroll wrote the story down and illustrated his own manuscript called Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, which he gave as a Christmas gift to Alice Liddell. The manuscript, along with Carroll’s original drawings of his whimsical fantasy world, stayed in Alice’s possession until her husband’s death in 1928, when she was forced to sell it for financial reasons. Though this enchanting edition is currently out of print, you can still find used copies online and at the library. Some of Zwerger’s prints, including one of the Alice cover illustration, are available on ArtKandy. Published in Italian as Le Avventure di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, translated by Teodorico Pietrocòla Rossetti. [88]
