We loved the little changes to power-ups for each character, and it’s great to actually be able to properly consider who you want to play as! Bananas can be dropped on any space you passed this turn, while Luigi’s can be placed on one of his properties anywhere on the board. Each character has a completely unique power that is triggered when they land on the space, and these can really turn the tide of a game.

Add to this the varying playing square boosts which enabled further game actions and its fair to say our heads were a little baffled. These fun gimmicks make choosing a character fun and interesting, and give each player a slightly different set of rules. Pass go to trigger a race from Mario Kart cup, Dodge banana peel tokens, toss shells, and collect coins.

With the game taking about 30-45 minutes to complete too it’s not too long for children to play either. We have played lots of Monopoly games over the years and it is the one game that the kids know the rules to without needing to be reminded. When you land on a property that someone else owns, pay them the rent shown on the property's Title Deed card. We have Monopoly Gamer and that was a big hit in this house, so we went into the review of Monopoly Gamer Mario Kart with big expectations and we were not disappointed. The Power-up die gives you one of six actions: Spiny Shell lets you target any player to drop 3 coins, Green Shell causes the next forward player from your position to drop 3 coins, Lightning Bolt causes all other players to drop 1 coin, Coins lets you collect 3 coins, and Banana lets you drop a Banana token on any space you traveled on after you move.I kind of want to bump it up a star because of how much fun I have with the kids playing it but I won’t because it boils down to this: it’s not a must have when it comes to board games; it still has the essence of Monopoly which can be a huge turn off for a lot of people.

We loved this approach to the game, as it means everything you do is getting you points or taking others’ away, even when only coins are impacted. The only criticism we had for the entire game was the fact that some characters’ powers are clearly better than others. Some of our vintage or prior versions of toy and game instructions may be more difficult to decipher or have less clarity.

What a great way for players to expand their Mario Kart character collection as they battle for the highest score. Hasbro changed the formula just enough and cleverly incorporated elements of the video game to breathe new life into a dumb game whose popularity is still a mystery to me. When you roll the dice to move around the board, there’s one for movement and one that has several items from Mario Kart on it, including a banana, green shell, spiny shell, coins and a lightning bolt. All these actions will get you points, the player with most points when the race card pile is depleted is the winner.
