For all the uproarious, seedy glamour of Open the Cage, Murphy – the title refers to what is best described as a battle cry, delivered to his long-time manager and partner whenever something big was about to happen – it is simultaneously haunted by death and loss. He takes us with him to a gay-themed weekend in Butlin's in Skegness, on a rowdy tour with Prisoner Cell Block H - the Musical and into the depths of the Australian rainforest, where he befriends a rare bird that can disembowel a man with a single kick. Paul, of course, went on to further success presenting his chat shows on Channel 4 and ITV, For the Love of Dogs and Animal Orphans on ITV, and his weekly show on BBC Radio 2, inter alia.

She’d come in in the morning, in the dressing gown with her mug and a piece of toast balanced on top: ‘Do you want a cup of tea, Paul? Love Paul O Grady's candour and the horror of the HIV wards and the loss he suffers in trying to find closure.

For me this one was the most enjoyable as its around this time that Lily Savage caught my attention, I can remember watching Lily on the Big Breakfast and of course Blankety Blank. Was brilliant as per usual however this book is more emotional then the previous three as it covers his experiences with AIDS including other things! But whether he’s writing about star-studded Hollywood parties, the devastating loss of close friends to AIDS, or late night shenanigans at the end of Blackpool Pier, Paul’s wit and humanity never desert him. Paul is involved in a plane crash, gets caught up in the LA riots and has a close encounter with Madonna. The 4th instalment of Paul O’Grady’s autobiography does not disappoint, all equally enjoyable with a good mix of laugh out loud and somber moments.

His four volumes of autobiography - At My Mother's Knee, The Devil Rides Out, Still Standing and Open the Cage, Murphy - are all Sunday Times bestsellers. The time he swallowed a lump of hash he had found in his pocket at Bangkok customs, so as not to get caught with it. The dramatis personae include a family of dolphins, Charlton Heston and the ghost of Joan of Arc - and there's a starring role for a certain remarkable dog, Buster Elvis Savage. A must read for any Paul O'Grady fan, Open the Cage, Murphy follows his brilliant comic creation Lily Savage as she embraces success and world domination beckons. At the end of the author's previous volume of autobiography, Still Standing, his brilliant comic creation Lily Savage stood on the brink of fame.Similarly, in another of his books he describes how he ends up in a ditch full of unmentionables in Eastern Europe. It is his fourth autobiography, but it barely takes him up to 1997, so it is safe to assume there are a few more volumes in him yet. He mentions Cilla briefly in the introduction to his new book, but only to explain why she isn’t in it.

Could do with a bit more show not tell when he is recounting the hilarity of taking his dog Buster down a ladder in a carrier bag. Daily MirrorFrom Britain's most beloved TV star, Open the Cage, Murphy is an action-packed roller-coaster ride through a decade of Paul O'Grady's life, stuffed full to the gunwales with hilarious stories, extreme situations and outrageous one-liners. From Britain's most beloved TV star, Open the Cage, Murphy is an action-packed roller-coaster ride through a decade of Paul O'Grady's life, stuffed full to the gunwales with hilarious stories, extreme situations and outrageous one-liners.It also talks about his time at the Edinburgh Festival and his (then) partner Murphy, plus when he got Buster. Born to a working class Irish migrant family in Birkenhead, O'Grady went through various jobs in his youth, including working in various bars, for the civil service and for social services, moving around the country to do so. This is an honest account of Paul's climb to the top - I won't say fight to the top - because this books gives the impression that he has enjoyed every single minute. I hope one day he does an autobiography of Lily Savage, but not sure who's life would be more outrageous Lily's or Paul’s. At the end of Paul’s previous volume of autobiography, Still Standing, his brilliant comic creation Lily Savage stood on the brink of fame.
