About this deal

Having been raised in a home where my mother is overly infatuated with John Wayne, I knew the Marshall Rooster Cogburn pretty well. I was also one of the many eager to rush into theaters to see the remake in 2010. As a fan of the character in the movies, I was only slightly sad that the real Rooster wasn't a Marshall, but I can't say that I didn't enjoy the real Rooster.

Arthur D. Murphy of Variety wrote that the film had "an embarrassingly prefab script, along with much forced and strident acting, all badly coordinated by the numb and ragged direction of Stuart Miller." Retrieved 20 March 2014.Rooster Cogburn, which was promoted as Rooster Cogburn (...and the Lady) [3] (the opening credits feature the simpler title), was the final film produced by Hal B. Wallis. While True Grit had been released by Paramount Pictures, Wallis made a deal with Universal Pictures to finance this film. The screenplay was written by actress Martha Hyer, who was Wallis' wife at the time, under the pen name Martin Julien. [4] Although Stuart Millar was a longtime Hollywood producer, he had directed only one film, When the Legends Die (1972) (based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Hal Borland), prior to helming Rooster Cogburn.

Sponsorship & Advertising Policy In the film, Cogburn has been stripped of his badge due to his drunken nature, but is given a chance to redeem himself by recovering a shipment of explosives for a U.S. Army troop and capturing the thieves who stole them. Meanwhile, those same outlaws have killed Rev. George Goodnight, whose spinster daughter, played by Hepburn, teams with Cogburn seeking justice for her father's murder — a similar motivation to True Grit's Mattie Ross, who sought revenge for the murder of her father.

But every once in a while, the remake is celebrated as much as—if not more than—the original. That's the case with the 1969 Western classic True Grit starring John Wayne (and his Oscar-winning performance) and the 2010 remake True Grit starring Jeff Bridges in the iconic role. The Coen Brothers assembled an elite filmmaking squad to remake True Grit, and they didn't settle for just any good cinematographer. They hired Roger Deakins, the legendary British cinematographer who's earned 15 Academy Award nominations for his work to date (and won twice). Open casting sessions were held in Texas in November 2009 for the role of Mattie Ross. The following month, Paramount Pictures announced a casting search for a 12- to 16-year-old girl, describing the character as a "simple, tough as nails young woman" whose "unusually steely nerves and straightforward manner are often surprising". [11] Steinfeld, then age 13, was selected for the role from a pool of 15,000 applicants. "It was, as you can probably imagine, the source of a lot of anxiety", Ethan Coen told The New York Times. "We were aware if the kid doesn't work, there's no movie". [9] A made-for-television sequel aired in 1978 entitled True Grit: A Further Adventure and starring Warren Oates and Lisa Pelikan. The TV-movie featured more adventures of Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross. I also see the book as giving a good view of the so called mountain people or “hillibillies” of the Appalachians and Ozarks. Forget the stereotypes that you have seen about people from these areas. These are people who live in close-knit families and communities. The do not trust outsiders until the outsider proves himself worthy of trust, and that may not come about for a generation or two. As Brett Cogburn points out these were hardworking people who saw no problem in bending the law a little to help their families to get by. If it took selling a little moonshine to raise some hard coinage the so be it and no outsider was going to stop them. The only person really hurt in this story was the one that can be considered a turncoat. They were and are clannish people and may fight amongst themselves but they will come together if one is threatened by an outsider.

The novel is narrated by Mattie Ross, churchgoing elderly spinster distinguished by intelligence, independence, and strength of mind. She recounts the story of her adventures fifty years earlier, in 1878, when she undertook a quest to avenge her father's murder by a drifter named Tom Chaney. She is joined on her quest by Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf (pronounced "La-beef"). The film was shot in the Santa Fe, New Mexico, area on 22 March and wrapped on 27 April 2010, as well as in Bartlett, Granger and Austin, Texas. [12] [13] The first trailer was released in September; a second trailer premiered with The Social Network. Matthews, Kristin L. (2018). " True Grit: A Radical Tale".
