Description

Standard lining paper has a few extra steps before it's ready to apply, including soaking the sheets with adhesive to avoid bubbles and a bad finish. Nevertheless, it's a highly durable and cost-effective product that's excellent at camouflaging damage. We've just moved into a new flat - built around 1900 and with lime plaster walls. They're largely okay, but there are lots of small defects across them. Mainly scraper gouges etc. We're on a tight budget so trying to repair them ourselves, but we're totally new to it all.

When lining paper is to be painted, a butt join is the way to go every day of the week, but for cross-lining under a finish paper a 1mm gap is perfectly fine. No more than that mind. First and foremost, paste-the-wall is a superior alternative to conventional lining paper. Rather than pasting the paper and waiting for it to expand before applying to the walls, you simply paste the wall and apply the paste-the-wall lining paper directly. As well as being tougher and more resistant, the added textile fibres mean it won’t leave bubbles or lift away at the seams. It’s easier to hang, but still robust and durable. The smooth surface makes it ideal for painting, with the paint going further on your walls. It’s also a paste-the-wall product, so it’s much easier to hang. Fibreliner Plus Ideally try to introduce some gentle ambient heat into the area where the lining paper is to help it dry properly. This will also help the paint dry faster so you can use the room sooner. How many drops does a roll of lining paper do? Now you know what lining paper is used for, it's time to decide which type is best for you. You can choose between standard lining paper or paste the wall lining paper, depending on your personal preference.

However, if you do have crumbling plaster, try to clean and repair the wall before putting up the lining paper. If you're unable to patch the plaster, you may need to remove the loose plaster, fill the hole or area with browning or bonding plaster, and then skim over it. A plasterer may be required if this is beyond your DIY skillset.

The common roll size for linen paper is 10m x 53cm. This means in a typical size room with 2.4m high walls you can expect to get four drops on straight ceiling to floor drops. So you will need around three rolls per wall depending on how many fixtures — doors, windows — you have. Available in grades 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1700 and 2000, Erfurt MAV lining papers produce the perfect base for decorating with other wall coverings, emulsion painting and some paint effects. There is a grade suitable for all decorating applications. Make sure you have your wallpaper paste already mixed and ready to go. Lay a strip on your pasting table and apply generously (but not too much that it will drip off) and evenly with a pasting brush. If you’re redecorating your walls, you may feel confused about which processes you’ll need to do. Lining paper vs plastering, lining paper vs skimming – how can you tell which will give you the perfect finish you’re after? If you are going to use lining paper why do all this? Should it not be the case that lining paper will take most of the problems out? Just a thought.I've seen DIY'ers and a few decorators (wrongly) sponging seams, which will a) potentially weaken the area and b) cause a butt joined seam to expand unnecessarily. This can lead to a seam showing through a thin finish paper or emulsion (it has expanded into an overlapped seam), hence the 1mm gap. It also speeds up the cross-lining process slightly. Incidentally, most decent pulp liners have a smooth and a rough side to them. Smooth side out for paint, rough side out for papering (suction from a rougher, more absorbent surface) helps laminate the top paper over the liner, but getting a bit off topic now. If you don't know which grade is best, choose the middle ground. Lining papers with a 1400 grade are usually sufficient to hide daily wear. 3. Preventing stains Lining paper eliminates any guesswork. While it may absorb more paint without the use of a primer, you won’t suffer in terms of adhesion or durability. In other words, it’s up to you whether you want to prime your lining paper beforehand or paint straight on and use a little more paint in the process. HOW TO HANG LINING PAPER So what makes it ‘pure’? Quite simply it’s made from pure pulp, sourced from carefully managed forests accredited by either FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification*). Before you start hanging lining paper you will need to prep the area you are working in. We are assuming that you have already prepped the walls. If not, see our section below on 'what's the best way to prepare a wall for lining paper?'. If possible empty the room you will be working in so you have full access to the walls and room for your pasting table. Alternatively, move your furniture to one side and cover the furniture and floor with dust sheets.
