After publishing eight books in his ongoing Sharpe series, Cornwell was approached by a production company interested in adapting them for television. Perhaps because he was on unfamiliar ground (or water, I guess), he was probably taking extra care in crafting this book. There are many books in this series that focus on land battles, beautifully and dramatically rendered with historical accuracy. However, after a few books of a similar vein, samey-ness sets in. I don't know if Cornwell rushed them out or if I'm just imagining it because a few them don't have quite the level of craft that this one does. That's not to say they're not enjoyable action-adventure pieces!Unfortunately the "Revenant" makes it to safety by reaching the port of Cadiz to join the French and Spanish fleets, when all of a sudden Admiral Nelson is arriving with a mighty fleet.
